I CARVE SPOONS WITH AXE, KNIFE & HOOK

NO POWER TOOLS AND NO SANDPAPER. I ONLY CARVE WITH HERITAGE CRAFT TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES.

I DON’T SELL MY SPOONS.

AND HERE’S WHY.

Drawing used to be a lifelong hobby. All I ever wanted to do was draw for a living. Once I’d made that happen, something changed - my relationship with drawing was different. Drawing was now my job, I didn’t want to do it in my downtime. When I started making (nicer) spoons, people asked to buy them. I was flattered, and I started to sell them. My relationship with carving changed it was different. I started to think of that precious time with a monetary value. Its was becoming a part-time job. I wasn’t enjoying it anymore.

So I made a decision. I decided to stop selling them. My love came back and my spoons improved almost overnight. I didn’t attach a monetary figure to my time. I allowed myself to play. Since then, amazing things have happened. I’ve been invited to teach internationally, I’ve won awards, I’m setting up a festival and I’m orchestrating a huge national project based on spoons. All because I allowed myself to play.
